Configure Recovery Administrator Credentials in App Volumes Manager

If a domain administrator is unable to log into App Volumes Manager due to certain issues, a recovery administrator can access App Volumes Manager. Credentials for a recovery administrator can be configured in App Volumes Manager. Using these credentials is an alternative way of accessing App Volumes Manager to resolve any domain login issues.

If issues such as incorrect domain configuration, lack of connectivity between App Volumes Manager and the identity provider, and client secret expiration occur, then domain administrators are unable to log into App Volumes Manager. With the recovery administrator account, an administrator can log into App Volumes Manager, resolve the issue, and subsequently, log in as the domain administrator. Recovery administrator credentials, username and password, can be configured in the Domains tab.

Note: Configuring the recovery administrator credentials is optional.

About the recovery administrator role

A recovery administrator is not associated with any identity provider. When you log into App Volumes Manager as the recovery administrator, you can access the following functionalities in the admin UI: Domains and Admin Roles. Accessing these functionalities allows you to resolve issues in domain configuration and assign existing roles to groups. The credentials for recovery administrator can be configured immediately after an install, upgrade, or any time depending on the requirement. Additionally, there is also an option to control the display of the Recovery Account Login link on the App Volumes login page. To access App Volumes as a recovery administrator, this link can be used to enter the recovery administrator credentials. Alternatively you can add ?recovery_admin=true to your login URL path.

Responsibilities of a recovery administrator

A recovery administrator can perform the following functions:

• Register a domain.

• Edit the registered domain or an existing domain.

• Assign admin roles.

Note: A recovery administrator is not allowed to edit or reset their credentials or add another recovery administrator. They are also not allowed to manage (remove or edit) any admin role.

Prerequisites

To configure the recovery administrator account, ensure that you are in the built-in Administrator role (complete access to App Volumes Manager functionality) or the Security Administrator role. For information about admin roles, see Managing Admin Roles.

Procedure

1. In App Volumes Manager, navigate to CONFIGURATION > Domains > RECOVERY ADMIN.

2. In the Recovery Administrator page, enter the Username and Password.

3. Confirm the password.

4. Optional If you want the Recovery Account Login link to be displayed in the App Volumes login page, then leave the checkbox selected.

   If you do not want this link displayed, then clear the checkbox. This action hides the checkbox in the login page. However, you can still access the link by adding ?recovery_admin=true to your App Volumes Manager login URL as follows: <App Volumes Manager login URL>/login?recovery_admin=true. For example: http://ExampleAppVolumesManager/login?recovery_admin=true
   As a result, the Recovery Account Login credentials page is displayed.

5. Click Save.

   Recovery administrator credentials are configured. Ensure that these credentials are easily available. When required, you can edit or remove these credentials using the EDIT and REMOVE functionalities respectively.

What To Do Next

If an issue occurs which prevents you from logging into App Volumes Manager as a domain administrator, perform the following:

1. Depending on your configuration for displaying the Recovery Account Login link, either click the Recovery Account Login link or add ?recovery_admin=true to your App Volumes Manager login URL.

2. In the Recovery Account Login page, enter the recovery administrator credentials and click Login.

3. Perform the necessary functionalities as recovery administrator.

   Note: You can access only the Domains and Admin Roles configuration pages.

4. To have complete access to App Volumes Manager functionalities, log out, and log in back using domain administrator credentials.
