Side-by-side updating occurs when two versions of a virtual application are running in parallel during the transition between the unlocking of an early version and the deployment of an updated version.
In Terminal Server environments, during the period of an update transition, multiple users can run different versions of a virtual application at the same time. Omnissa ThinApp allows you to update or roll back an application that is running on a network share for multiple users. The update process occurs when the user quits the application and starts it a second time.
File Locks
Starting an application locks the EXE file package. This file lock ensures that any computer or user who accesses a specific version of an application continues to have that version available as long as the application processes and subprocesses are running.
When you store an application in a central location that can be accessed by many users, the file lock prevents administrators from replacing a packaged EXE file with a new version until all users exit the application and release their locks. Until that time, the older version and newer version run side-by-side.
You cannot replace, delete, or move a file-locked application. After all users have closed the earlier version of the application and the package is unlocked, you can delete it. However, the EXE file should remain in place because the shortcut on users' machines points to this file.
If you must roll back to an earlier version and the most recent version is still locked, copy the old version and give it the highest version number.
