The initial setup of IMS for use in a first-gen environment primarily means importing images into IMS's image catalog. This documentation page provides a process overview and then links to pages with details for accomplishing each process step.
When an image is in the IMS image catalog and has at least one defined marker, then you can publish that image and the published image can work in pools, farms, and VDI desktop assignments.

Attention: This information applies solely when you have access to a first-gen tenant environment in the first-gen control plane. As described in KB-92424, the first-gen control plane has reached end of availability (EOA). See that article for details.

An indication of which environment you have, Horizon Cloud or first-gen, is the pattern that appears in the browser's URL field after you log in to your environment and see the Horizon Universal Console label. For a Horizon Cloud environment, the console's URL address contains a portion like /hcsadmin/. The first-gen console's URL has a different section (/horizonadmin/).
Initial Setup - High-Level Overview
Note: In all of these first-generation Horizon Cloud documentation pages, the term Horizon 8 pod includes Connection Servers running a software version that is compatible with the first-gen Horizon Cloud control plane.
By design, a first-gen tenant's pod fleet can have both Horizon 8 pods and first-gen Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure deployments.
For both types, ensure that you have met the appropriate IMS requirements as described in IMS System Requirements for a First-Gen Horizon Cloud Environment.
The initial setup process for using IMS with the fleet's pods differs slightly by deployment type (Horizon 8 pods or first-gen Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure deployments).

Horizon 8 pods
You must first configure the participating vCenter Server instances. Refer to Horizon 8 Pods - Configure the vCenter Server Instances.
With that configuration in place, then you can import images from those configured vCenter Server instances into IMS's image catalog. Refer to First-Gen Tenants - IMS and Horizon 8 Pods - Import an Image from vCenter into the Image Catalog.
After the images are in the image catalog, then you can create pools and farms based on these managed images.

First-gen Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure deployments
You import images from the Azure Marketplace into IMS's image catalog. Refer to Import an Image from the Azure Marketplace into the Image Catalog
After the images are in the image catalog, then you can create farms and desktop assignments based on these managed images.
