When the provider type is Google Cloud Platform, you can use GCP resource labels to manage resources used with the Horizon Cloud on Google Cloud Platform Edge. When you configure labels on resources in Horizon Cloud, those labels are applied to the appropriate GCP resources for the resources that you applied them to in Horizon Cloud. You can then use the resource labels to track Horizon Cloud resources.
Note: Horizon Cloud on Google Cloud Platform is currently available in Limited Availability (LA) mode only.
GCP resource labels are metadata elements that allow you to manage resources in your environment. A label consists of a key and the key's corresponding value. For more information about GCP resource labels, see Google Cloud Platform product documentation.
How GCP Resource Labels Work with Horizon Cloud
In Horizon Cloud, custom GCP resource labels are applied to GCP resources managed through Horizon Cloud, including Horizon Edge Gateway VMs, Unified Access Gateway VMs, and pool VMs. Labels are applied at the resource level to help you organize, track, and manage your GCP resources.
Propagation and Inheritance
In the Horizon Universal Console, when you add or edit a provider, you can add GCP resource labels. At that time, you have the option of propagating the labels to all supported resources. Allowing resources to inherit resource labels in this way can facilitate the application and organization of resource labels.
- If inheritance is turned off, any labels from the primary provider already applied to resources are removed until inheritance is turned back on.
- When inheritance is enabled, the provider's labels are automatically applied to all supported resources associated with that provider.
Conflicting Labels
When a provider with propagation enabled has the same label configured on a Horizon Edge or Unified Access Gateway, or on pools, the label configured on the resource takes precedence and overwrites the provider label.
Syncing Labels
When resource labels are added or edited, Horizon Cloud asynchronously updates those labels on the appropriate GCP resources. If an error occurs during synchronization, an error message displays in the Horizon Universal Console, presenting you with the option to retry.
Managing GCP Resource Labels in the Console
At the Provider Level
When you add or edit a GCP provider in the Horizon Universal Console, you can configure resource labels that will be applied to all resources associated with that provider. A list of the labels inherited from the provider is displayed, and you can choose to add additional labels.
At the Horizon Edge Level
When you configure a Horizon Edge, you can view the labels inherited from the provider and add Edge-specific labels. Edge-specific labels take precedence over provider-level labels when there is a conflict.
At the Unified Access Gateway Level
When you configure a Unified Access Gateway, you can manage Google resource labels as needed. This includes:
- Viewing inherited labels from the provider and Edge
- Editing and deleting existing labels
- Adding new labels to be applied to the resource groups specific to this Unified Access Gateway
At the Pool Level
When you create or edit a pool, you can view the labels inherited from the provider and add pool-specific labels. Pool-specific labels take precedence over provider-level labels when there is a conflict.
GCP Label Format Requirements
GCP resource labels follow Google Cloud's label format requirements:
- A label is a key-value pair.
- Keys and values can only contain lowercase letters, numeric characters, underscores, and hyphens. International characters are allowed.
- Keys must start with a lowercase letter or an international character.
- Each key must be 63 characters or fewer.
- Each value must be 63 characters or fewer (can be empty).
For more information about GCP label format requirements, see the Google Cloud documentation on labels.
