Preparing a Windows Golden Image Virtual Machine for Instant Clones

To deploy a Windows instant-clone desktop pool, you must first prepare a golden image virtual machine in vCenter Server. The golden image is the source from which Horizon creates each instant clone, so the configuration you apply to it carries over to every desktop in the pool.

Preparing the golden image includes the following tasks:

  • Configuring the Windows environment on the golden image virtual machine.

  • Setting up Microsoft volume activation so that Windows is activated correctly on each clone.

  • Deactivating Windows hibernation to reduce the size of each clone’s virtual disk.

  • Choosing ClonePrep or Sysprep to customize your virtual desktops. If you use Sysprep, create a customization specification in vSphere.

  • If needed, increasing the timeout limit for ClonePrep customization scripts.

  • Using compute profiles to reduce the number of golden images you need for different desktop pool requirements.
