Amazon WorkSpaces Core - Pool, Bundle, and Image Maintenance

You can use the Horizon Console's MAINTAIN action to change the Amazon WorkSpaces Core bundle used by the desktop pool.

The maintenance options available depend on the pool type:

  • Floating (non-persistent) pools: Use Current, Update Bundle, and Update Bundle Image.
  • Dedicated (persistent) pools: Update Bundle and Update Bundle Image.
OptionUse it to
Use CurrentRefresh the pool by recreating the desktops from the current bundle and image, clearing any artifacts. Floating pools only.
Update BundleChange the bundle the pool uses. Typically used to change hardware type when machines need more or less CPU or RAM.
Update Bundle ImageSwap the image used by the bundle, typically for application or operating system updates.

When updating the pool's bundle, you can select bundles from the pool's configured capacity provider. Bundle changes can result in additional costs. Review the Amazon WorkSpaces documentation for details.

When you use the Update Bundle Image option to update the image that is in use by a bundle, Horizon will update the bundle image in Amazon. The Bundle in Amazon is the source that contains the hardware, storage, and image combination. This image change will affect every pool using the Bundle. If you have multiple pools using the same Bundle, the image change will also be updated for the other pools. This saves repetitive manual work, but use caution, because it can also affect a pool you did not intend to update.

The secondary pools are not automatically updated. New machines provisioned will be updated as the old ones are deleted. Depending on the pool configuration, all machines may eventually be updated. To force the update to a secondary floating pool, you will need to schedule an update using the Use Current option.

For dedicated pools, updates are forward only. Existing machines are not touched, and the new bundle or image is applied only as new machines are provisioned.

Prerequisites

Procedure

  1. Select the desktop pool and click MAINTAIN.

The Schedule Update wizard opens on the Image step.

  2. Select Update Bundle.

The wizard displays the pool's current Bundle and Image names, followed by all the bundles available from the pool's Amazon WorkSpaces Core capacity provider.

To change only the image used by the current bundle, select Update Bundle Image instead.

  3. Select the bundle you want from the table and click NEXT.

Only bundles in the Available state can be selected. Use the pagination controls to page through the list, MANAGE COLUMNS to display additional bundle details, and the refresh icon to reload the list if a recently created bundle is not shown.

  4. On the Ready to Complete step, review the update and confirm it.

The pool's settings are updated to reflect the selected bundle and image names. Whenever the system generates new machines for the pool, those machines will consume the new bundle.
