Running Windows Virtual Machines on Native Microsoft Azure

Horizon supports virtual machines running natively on Microsoft Azure.

Operating systems and Microsoft Azure VM sizes

The following operating systems are supported:

  • Single-session (VDI): Windows 10 22H2 64-bit, Windows 11 23H2 64-bit, Windows 11 22H2 64-bit, Windows 11 21H2 64-bit
  • Multi-session apps and desktops (RDS hosts): Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, Windows Server 2019 Datacenter, Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, Windows Server 2025 Datacenter, Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session, 23H2, Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session, 22H2, Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session, 21H2, Windows 10 Enterprise multi-session, 22H2

The Microsoft Windows 10 N Editions and Windows 11 N Editions are unsupported.

In terms of Microsoft Azure GPU VM families, Horizon supports the Microsoft Azure VM sizes in the GPU accelerated set of families, the families listed in the Microsoft Azure documentation here. The families in the FPGA accelerated set are unsupported.

About Horizon Agent running in native Microsoft Azure VMs

Running Horizon Agent in virtual machines on native Microsoft Azure has the following limitations:

  • Horizon Agent installation in Desktop mode is not supported on Windows Server OS.
  • Windows 10 and Windows 11 multi-session VMs cannot provide both a desktop pool and application pool from the same host. This means that for the use case where you want to provide both a desktop pool and application pool, you'll need two (2) multi-session VMs: one VM to use for the desktop pool and one VM for the application pool.
  • For H264, HEVC, and AV1 decoding, Horizon supports the hardware encoding protocols that are available on the underlying GPU.
