Horizon Pods - Create a Desktop Pool Suitable for Multi-Cloud Assignments

When you are creating a desktop pool in a Horizon pod and you want to make it suitable for use with Universal Broker and multi-cloud assignments, you must configure specific mandatory settings on the pool. This documentation page describes those mandatory elements.

This page describes only those elements that make a desktop pool suitable for use with Universal Broker and multi-cloud assignments. If you need overall information about creating desktop pools in a Horizon pod, refer to Desktops and Applications in Horizon in the Horizon 8 documentation set.

Note: Manual desktop pools are not eligible to participate in multi-cloud assignments.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the Horizon Console user interface for any Connection Server instance in the target pod.

  2. In Horizon Console, select Inventory > Desktops.

  3. Click Add.

    The Add Pool wizard appears.

  4. Follow the prompts in the wizard, and make the following configurations that are mandatory to have the pool suitable for a multi-cloud assignment.

    • Type page: Select Automated Desktop Pool.

    • vCenter Server page: Select Instant Clone or Full Virtual Machines.

    • User Assignment page: Select Floating or Dedicated.

When you select Dedicated, also select Enable automatic assignment.

Do not configure any manual assignments of machines to users.

    • Desktop Pool Settings page: Select Cloud Managed. Universal Broker only recognizes desktop pools marked as Cloud Managed.

Note: You cannot use Horizon Console to delete or deactivate a desktop pool configured as Cloud Managed.

    • Remote Display Settings page: Select the default display protocol for the desktop pool.
  5. To configure additional settings for the pool, continue to follow the prompts in the wizard.

  6. Click Submit to create the pool.

What to do next

If you created a dedicated pool for use with Universal Broker and multi-cloud assignments, remove any user assignments from the virtual machines included in the pool. To read about removing user assignments, refer to Desktops and Applications in Horizon in the Horizon 8 documentation set.

Now that the desktop pool is configured suitable for use in a multi-cloud assignment, proceed to Horizon Pods - Create a Multi-Cloud Assignment of VDI Desktops.
