Adding and Publishing an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core

After you have prepared for adding an image as described in Prepare to Add an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core, you can add an image by using either of the following methods.

Note that adding an image by using these methods may also be referred to as importing an image.

• Adding an image from an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance image source

  

• Adding an image from an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image image source

  

Adding an image from an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance

Use the following procedure to add an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance.

1. Ensure that you have performed the prerequisite procedure described in Prepare to Add an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

   Note: When you install the Horizon Agent manually, pools created from the image will fail if the required pairing file Config.bin is not present at C:\AzureData\Config.bin or if the installed HAI agent version is lower than 25.1.

2. In the Horizon Cloud console, click Images> Add > Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

3. When prompted, enter an image name, description, and markers, and click Next.

   The image version is automatically appended to the image name you specify with dashes to create the image copy name (for example, Image-1-0, Image-1-100). If you add new markers, they are saved when you save the image.

   You can add and edit Amazon WorkSpaces Core markers (tags) at both the provider level and the image level. For more information, see Using Amazon Resource Tags.

4. On the Image Source page, select Amazon EC2 Custom Instance.

   

5. In the Destination section, select the Site, Horizon Edge, and Provider.

6. In the Instance details section:

   • Select an Amazon EC2 instance to be used to create the Amazon WorkSpaces Core BYOL image.
   • Select the Operating System (OS) of the selected image or EC2 instance.

7. In the Admin credentials for VM section, enter the Username and Password for the local admin account that will access the VM during image customization.

   • Usernames cannot exceed 19 characters and cannot end with a period(.).
   • Prohibited user names, such as guest or administrator, cannot be used.
   • Passwords must be 12 to 123 characters and meet at least three of the following requirements: lowercase letter [a-z], uppercase letter [A-Z], number, special character (!@#$%/^&). Some passwords are prohibited, such as Password1.

Adding an image from an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image

Use the following procedure to add an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image.

1. Ensure that you have performed the prerequisite procedure described in Prepare to Add an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

   Note: Pools created from the image will fail if the required pairing file Config.bin is not present at C:\AzureData\Config.bin or if the installed HAI agent version is lower than 25.1.

2. From the Horizon Universal Console Home page, click Images > Add > Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

3. When prompted, enter an image name, description, and markers, and click Next.

   The image version is automatically appended to the image name you specify with dashes to create the image copy name (for example, Image-1-0, Image-1-100). If you add new markers, they are saved when you save the image.

   You can add and edit Amazon WorkSpaces Core markers (tags) at both the provider level and the images level. For more information, see Using Amazon Resource Tags.

4. On the Image Source page, select Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image.

   

5. In the Image Details section:

   • Select a WorkSpaces Core image. All images must be a part of the WorkSpaces Core image catalog.
   • Select the correct Operating System (OS) of the selected image. This selection cannot be verified after it is saved.
   • Select the correct GPU Type, if applicable. This selection cannot be verified after it is saved.

6. In the Admin credentials for VM section, enter the Username and Password for the local admin account used to access the operating system during image customization.

   • Usernames cannot exceed 19 characters and cannot end with a period(.). Prohibited usernames, such as guest or administrator, cannot be used.
   • Passwords must be 12 to 123 characters and meet at least three of the following requirements: lowercase letter [a-z], uppercase letter [A-Z], number, special character (!@#$%/^&). Some passwords are prohibited, such as Password1.

Publishing an image

After you have added an image, you can publish it.

Prerequisites

Before publishing an image version from an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance, ensure the following:

• If you plan to clone this image as an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image (see Clone an Image as an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image), do not install AppX or MSIX versions of applications (for example, Notepad++) in the user context.

  Note: Failure to meet this requirement can cause Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image publishing to fail. Removing the AppX package directly from an AWS WorkSpace does not permanently resolve the issue. When a WorkSpace restarts, its system volume is restored from the base image from which it was created. As a result, any AppX package removed after deployment is restored during reboot because the package remains included in the source image. To avoid publishing failures, ensure that AppX/MSIX applications are not installed in the image before publishing.

1. In the Horizon Universal Console, click Images and then click an image that is in a Ready to Publish state.

2. On the Image Details page, select the relevant image version, and then click Unpublished > Publish.

3. In the Requirements section, verify that all listed requirements are met, and then select I confirm that all requirements are met.

   Note:

   • If you choose to install the Horizon Agent manually, pools created from this image will fail if the required agent pairing file C:\AzureData\Config.bin is missing, or if the installed HAI agent version is lower than 25.1.
   • If you enabled automatic Horizon Agent installation during publishing, Horizon Cloud installs both the Horizon Agent and the pairing configuration automatically. For prerequisites, see Prepare to Add an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core.

4. In the Properties section, enter a description. This field is required.

5. In the Destination section, the Source Horizon Edge is automatically populated based on the selected image version. This cannot be changed.

6. If you enabled Install Horizon agent during image creation or publish, select the required agent features for the image.

   Note: Turn off App Volumes-related agent features.

7. Click Publish.
