Clone an Image Version Sourced from an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance

You create a new image version in Horizon Cloud by cloning an existing image version as an incremented version from an available major or minor version. This cloning operation is only supported for image versions that are sourced from an existing Amazon EC2 Custom Instance image.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites exist for the image version that you want to clone:

  • The image must have been imported into Horizon Cloud as an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance.
  • The image version must be a published Amazon EC2 Custom Instance-based image in Horizon Cloud.
  • The image version must be available in Horizon Cloud.

Considerations

The following considerations are helpful as you prepare to clone Amazon EC2 Custom Instance images in Horizon Cloud.

  • An Amazon EC2 Custom Instance will be created on the same Subnet and VPC as the source EC2 Instance.
  • IP address will be auto-assigned during cloning based on the configuration of the Subnet associated with the source EC2 Instance.
  • The cloned Amazon EC2 Custom Instance will be launched with the same security groups as the source EC2 Instance.
  • The cloned Amazon EC2 instance will be deployed with the same instance type as the source EC2 Instance. Ensure to use an instance type that supports Dedicated Instances.
  • When a cloned cloned Amazon EC2 instance is deleted from the Administration Console, the EC2 instance is terminated.
  • Cloning is only supported for Amazon EC2 Custom Instance images. To create versions of Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image, see Add an Image Version to an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image.

Procedure

  1. From the Horizon Universal Console Home page, click the Images tile.

  2. On the Images page, click an Image Name that was added from the Amazon WorkSpaces Core source as an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance, to navigate to the Image page.

  3. Select an image and click Published > Copy as Image Version.

  4. In the Copy as Image Version section, select one of the following options:

    • Select Major to upgrade the image, for example for a different software. This increments the major part of the version number.
    • Select Minor to upgrade the image incrementally, for example for patching or existing software upgrades. This increments the minor part of the version number.

Note: You can have up to ninety-nine (99) versions of a major or minor upgrade image. A total of 99 major versions can be created. A total of 99 minor versions can be created under any major version.

  5. Enter a Description and optionally add Markers.

  6. Click Save to clone the image.

After the clone operation is complete and the status displays as Added, you can Publish the Image version.
