Clone an Image as an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image

You can clone an existing published image to create a new image as an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Instance in Horizon Cloud. This functionality supports customers who need to manually install software such as antivirus programs or Microsoft Office on the Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image before publishing.

Background: AWS restricts importing images that contain certain applications such as Microsoft Office or multiple antivirus programs. For details, see the AWS documentation on common image errors. The Clone as Image operation creates a new Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image as its output, using an interim WorkSpaces bundle during the process.

Prerequisites

Before you clone an image as an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image, ensure the following:

1. The parent image (Amazon EC2 custom instance or Amazon WorkSpaces Core custom image) has been published.
   • If the parent source is an Amazon EC2 custom instance, it must have been imported into Horizon Cloud and published with Horizon Agent features selected. See Method 1: AWS EC2 Custom Instance Import and Add and Publish an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core.
   • If the parent source is an already prepared Horizon WS Core image, it must be registered and added as a published image. See Method 2: AWS WorkSpaces Core Custom Image Import, Add and Publish an Image with Amazon WorkSpaces Core and Add an Image Version to an Amazon WorkSpaces Core Custom Image.
2. The image version you intend to clone must be in an Available or Partially Available state.
3. If the parent image is an Amazon EC2 Custom Instance, ensure the prerequisites described in Publishing an Image were followed for the parent image.

Procedure

1. From the Horizon Universal Console, select Images in the left menu.
2. On the Images page, click the image name that contains the version you want to clone.
3. Select the image version and click Copy > Copy as Image.
4. In the General Information section, enter a New Image Name, Description, and Marker, then click Next.
5. On the Image Details page, verify that Target VM Type is set to Amazon WorkSpaces Core Bundle Custom Image, then specify the following:
   • User Volume (in GB)
   • User Volume Encryption Disks (toggle on or off)
   • Root Volume (in GB)

• Root Volume Encryption Disks (toggle on or off)

6. In the Machine Identity (Domain) section, specify a Directory ID.
   • The directory must be manually created in the AWS Console under Directory Service and registered in AWS Console > WorkSpaces > Directories.
   • For Windows Server images, the WorkSpace directory tenancy must be set to SHARED.
   • For Windows 11 images, the WorkSpace directory tenancy must be set to DEDICATED.
7. On the Network page, confirm the VPC, Availability Zones, and Subnets, then click Save.
