Synthetic URL Monitoring

Use Synthetic URL Monitoring in Omnissa Workspace ONE Experience Management on specific web applications and URLs to identify network performance issues and availability. The monitoring telemetry from devices contributes to the overall user experience score displayed in Omnissa Intelligence.

How does this feature work?

Create the test in Intelligence and assign the test to devices using Omnissa Workspace ONE UEM smart groups. The system deploys the test to devices using Workspace ONE UEM custom profiles. The custom profile adds a test config file to the device.

The Experience Management Telemetry Agent that is included in the Omnissa Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub or the separate Experience Management for Windows agent communicate data from the test config on the device to Intelligence. You can view telemetry data and manage the test and the test config in Intelligence using the Synthetic URL Monitoring page.

How does this feature help the business?

• Visibility: Synthetic URL Monitoring gives you visibility into the availability of critical apps and services before users create help desk tickets.
• Perspective: Test results come from your users' devices, so the results reflect the perspective of the user rather than the perspective of a server that monitors service uptime.
• Freestyle Orchestrator: You can use test results in Freestyle Orchestrator to automate notifications to users, to automate notifications to IT, and to automate IT processes. For example, create a workflow to automatically create service desk tickets depending on your test results.

Test configuration best practices

Important: Follow these best practices to maximize test coverage and to minimize scale and performance impact on the web resources and destinations you are testing.

• All tests on the Telemetry Agent run at a random time between [0, frequency]. You set the frequency in the Create Test wizard in Intelligence. The minimum value is 30 minutes. This minimum frequency value minimizes the potential of large numbers of devices requesting a connection to a web application or to a service, simultaneously.
• General implications come from the test frequency, the number of systems Synthetic URL Monitoring is enabled on, and the resulting number of times per second, on average, that the target URL is hit.
• Start with a limited number of client devices. Before using this feature in large-scale device environments, evaluate the stress test capability of the target URL web server.
• Manage the test config file from the Synthetic URL Monitoring page in Intelligence.
  • Do not delete the associated custom profile in Workspace ONE UEM.
  • You can deactivate the test config in Intelligence to remove it from devices.
  • You can delete a test config that is in the draft state but you cannot delete a published test.
  • Deleting the associated custom profile in UEM orphans the config file and breaks the test connection.

Requirements

To use Synthetic URL Monitoring, meet the listed requirements.

• Activate Desktop Advanced Telemetry in the Integrations section or activate the Experience Management solution.
• Deploy tests to devices. Currently, the feature works on Windows devices.
• Manage your Windows devices with Workspace ONE UEM (UEM Managed Mode).
• Deploy one of the Experience Management for Windows agents to your Windows devices.
  • Deploy the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub for Windows that includes the Telemetry Agent for Windows.
  • Deploy the separate Experience Management for Windows agent.
  • You do not need to deploy both agents.
• Have the names of the Workspace ONE UEM smart groups that include the devices where you want to deploy the test. You cannot create smart groups in Intelligence. You can only create them in Workspace ONE UEM.

Data gathering behaviors

The Telemetry Agent for Windows gathers data for the Synthetic URL Monitoring feature using the listed behaviors.

• It gathers data in a time-series, polling method to allow for averaging, median, and peak calculations by Intelligence.
• It gathers data on basic latency, routing, and errors for the URLs provided.
• It gathers data at an administrator defined interval, and the minimum time interval is 30 minutes.

How do you configure and deploy Synthetic URL Monitoring?

In Intelligence, create a test and assign it to Workspace ONE UEM smart groups. This assignment deploys a test config to devices in the smart group. The Telemetry Agent sends data to Intelligence for viewing and manipulation. View data on the Synthetic URL Monitoring page in Intelligence.

1. In Intelligence, go to Workspace > Experience Management > Synthetic URL Monitoring.
2. Select Create Test.
3. Complete the Create Test wizard.
   • Enter a name for the test.
   • In the General section, enter the URL you want to test, select the IP Version, and select the Platform.
   • In the Test Details section, select the types of test you want to deploy to devices, configure the Test Type, Frequency, Timeout, and select the HTTP Methods.
   • In the Test Agents section, select the Workspace ONE UEM smart groups that include the devices to which you want to deploy the test.
4. Publish the test settings or save your settings as a draft and publish later.

How do you manage the test config on devices?

Use the Synthetic URL Monitoring page to manage the test config.

Important: Do not delete the custom profile that is associated with the test config file from the Workspace ONE UEM console. Delete a draft test config or deactivate a published test config file from the Synthetic URL Monitoring page in Intelligence to remove it from devices.

1. In Intelligence, go to Workspace > Experience Management > Synthetic URL Monitoring.
2. Select the test you want to manage.
3. You can Deactivate, Delete, Edit, and Publish the test depending on the status of the test.
   • Statuses include Draft, Inactive, and Published.
   • Use the Deactivate menu option to remove a test from devices without deleting it from the Synthetic URL Monitoring page, so that the test is available to deploy later.
   • You can Delete a test that is in Draft status, but you cannot delete a test that is published. You can only Deactivate a published test.

Create a custom dashboard

You can create a custom dashboard to interact with your Synthetic URL Monitoring test results. For example, create a custom dashboard to display your tests for a certain app.

1. In Intelligence, go to Workspace > Dashboards> and select Add.
2. Select Custom Dashboard.
3. Enter a name for the dashboard. For example, enter Synthetic URL Monitoring on Acme URL.
4. Select Add Widget.
5. In the Available Data Sources section, select Employee Experience > Synthetic URL Monitoring.
6. In the Filter section, select Apps > Application Product Name that Includes an app name you enter. You can use the preview pane to check that the filters are returning the results you need.
